Onboarding your employees, even if you work remotely, can be a tricky process. ๐๏ธ Yet, it’s an essential step to ensure they integrate well, feel comfortable, and become operational quickly. Last year, I was asked to create something to make onboarding new developers easier in one of the companies I worked for. This template is based on that work and has been tested with several new hires. ๐ช
The goal is to provide a suggested timeline for newcomers. Some tasks are to be completed on the first day, others in the first week, and so on. The deadlines are adjustable. Each task has a referrer – someone the new employee can contact if they have any questions.
Using this template, it’s possible to onboard multiple people simultaneously, and plan different onboarding schedules depending on their job role and team. ๐ You’ll have a comprehensive overview of the progress of all new employees, so you can easily tell if they’re doing well or not.
I also suggest completing and using the pre-onboarding checklist to remind you of all the tasks you need to do to welcome the new person (e.g. activating accounts, buying equipment).
The template includes the following:
– An onboarding presentation for the employee
– An onboarding schedule (duplicable) for the employee
– A pre-onboarding checklist
– An example of onboarding monitoring
– A complete documentation explaining each step
– A FAQ that is updated over time
– Resources to read that are updated over time
